The common questions about how Counsl works, what it costs, and how we keep your data safe. Still unsure? A 15-minute demo is the fastest way to see it.
Counsl gives your business fast, confidential employment law advice from a qualified, practising solicitor — delivered through the tools you already use, like Microsoft Teams and your HR system. Every question is read and answered by a real solicitor, with the platform doing the admin behind the scenes. It's designed to feel like having an employment solicitor in-house, without the cost of hiring one.
Counsl is a simple monthly subscription with unlimited queries included — no per-query charges and no six-minute billing units. Your price is a fixed monthly amount, tailored to the size of your organisation, and it flexes as your team changes: if your headcount goes up or down, the fee adjusts to match. Smaller teams, single-site care homes, and small charities are welcome too — we'll tailor a plan to your size. Because the price is fixed and predictable, you can use us as much as you need without worrying about the bill going up every time you ask a question.
Data security is built into Counsl from the ground up. All data is encrypted, both in transit and at rest, and is stored on UK and EU-based servers in compliance with GDPR. This is an important difference from using a generic AI tool: when businesses put employee information into consumer AI platforms, that data often leaves the region and can be used to train the underlying models. With Counsl, your data stays in the UK and EU, encrypted and GDPR-compliant, and is never used to train any AI. The platform holds the relevant security certifications, and we're happy to walk your team through our security arrangements as part of a demo.
Yes. The advice you receive is confidential, and every query and answer is kept in a secure, private case file that only your organisation and your solicitor can access. Personal details are handled carefully, and where the platform prepares information for the solicitor, it does so within our secure environment — not by sending your employee data out to a third-party AI. If you ever need a record of a matter, the platform can produce an anonymised summary on demand.
HR consultants offer useful general support, but there are two key differences. First, your advice comes from a qualified, practising solicitor — not a generalist adviser — so it's grounded in the law, not just good-practice guidance. Second, Counsl keeps a secure, structured record of the advice given, and can produce an anonymised summary of a matter on demand — which matters if a situation ever escalates. In short: an HR consultant helps you run good processes; Counsl gives you legally-grounded advice and a clear record to back it up, delivered just as quickly.
Traditional law firms are typically slow and expensive for everyday questions — you wait days for a response, and you're billed by the hour (often in six-minute units). They also tend to get involved once a dispute has already escalated. Counsl is built for the opposite: fast, same-working-day advice on the day-to-day questions, at a fixed and predictable cost, delivered through the systems you already use.
Just as importantly, our model is different. We are not a litigation firm, and we don't make money from tribunal claims. We're focused on prevention — helping you handle employment issues correctly and early, so they never become claims in the first place. We believe the best employment tribunal claim is the one that never gets filed. Note that Counsl is not a law firm and is not regulated by the SRA; we provide a platform together with access to advice from a qualified, practising solicitor.
Counsl is designed for organisations that face regular employment law questions but don't have — or can't justify — a full in-house legal team. We work particularly well for organisations in people-heavy, regulated sectors such as care providers and charities, where employment issues arise constantly and the cost of getting them wrong is high.
Anything in the everyday run of employment matters — disciplinaries and grievances, sickness and capability, performance management, TUPE, redundancy and restructuring, contracts and policies, flexible working requests, right-to-work questions, discrimination issues, and exit conversations. If in doubt, just ask.
You'll receive a same-working-day response. The platform gathers the relevant documents and briefs your solicitor immediately, so you're not waiting days for an answer. If you'd rather talk something through, you can book a call.
You can absolutely speak to a person. Counsl is a hybrid of real solicitor and smart platform — the technology makes things fast, but a qualified solicitor reviews and answers every query, and you can book a call with them whenever you'd prefer to talk it through rather than message.
